Comprehensive Health Care Provider Resources for Effective Screening, Diagnosis, Staging, Treatment, and Prevention

What is Syphilis?

Syphilis is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) that is caused by the bacteria Treponema pallidum. Syphilis can be cured with antibiotics, but if left untreated, the infection may result in the spread of infection, neurological and organ damage, and spread during pregnancy to the fetus, causing congenital abnormalities, stillbirth, or infant death (learn more).

The CTC-SRH has created a suite of resources available to assist clinical services providers with the following:

  • Understand the rate of primary, secondary, and congenital syphilis in their community
  • Understand when to screen asymptomatic persons for syphilis
  • Determine if providers should use the traditional or reverse screening algorithm for testing
  • Gain insight into the appropriate treatment of syphilis according to the stage of syphilis
  • Understand follow-up for subsequent titers and partner testing and treatment

In addition, syphilis point-of-care testing job aids, podcasts, and other resources allow providers to determine if rapid testing would enhance screening and rapid detection/treatment in your clinic.
