Syphilis is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) that is caused by the bacteria Treponema pallidum. Syphilis can be cured with antibiotics, but if left untreated, the infection may result in the spread of infection, neurological and organ damage, and spread during pregnancy to the fetus, causing congenital abnormalities, stillbirth, or infant death (learn more).
