Beginning in 2010, the CDC published the first U.S. Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use (U.S. MEC), which provided recommendations on safe use of contraceptive methods for women with various medical conditions and other characteristics. A companion document, the U.S. Selected Practice Recommendations for Contraceptive Use (U.S. SPR), provides guidance on how to use contraceptive methods safely and effectively once they are deemed to be medically appropriate. The 2024 update addresses a selected group of common, yet sometimes complex, issues regarding initiation and use of specific contraceptive methods. Join colleagues and CDC representatives Kate Curtis, PhD and Antoinette Nguyen, MD, MPH for an informal ‘Drop In Active Learning Sessions’ (DIALS) to discuss the 2024 updates to the SPR in detail and to have your questions answered! For information on the updated U.S. MEC, check out our recorded companion MEC DIALS.
Learning Objectives
1. Describe the history of the U.S. SPR guidance document.
2. List changes/updates to the U.S. SPR.
3. Discuss important clinical trials and other evidence used to update the U.S. SPR.
